Matt Coe – Founder

Dingle Forge

I love and have a fascination for handmade objects, whether it be the simplest hand tool to the largest sculptural structure. All will have been crafted and formed with the care and passion only found with an artisan made object.

My smithing journey started in 1993.After leaving the military I embarked on a career in metal fabrication with an Exeter based company specializing in in special design and interior fittings. This was mainly for the hospitality trade, Europe wide. During my time with the fabrication firm, I attended many blacksmithing short courses and training days, honing my metal working skills and combining them with my newfound love for smithing. Three years later I left to start my own business, blacksmithing for myself.

Being self-taught, I pride myself on applying a fresh approach with metal work. WonderfUlly flowing designs with forged metals and creative thinking are my trademark. Inspired by nature and the natural world around me I like to take those elements and introduce them into my work.

All commissions are important to whether they are large or small, from a toasting fork to a garden bench to a large set of sculptural gates. I always encourage my clients to be part of the design process where possible with their own views and ideas, this makes for a good working relationship and will always add to the commissioned piece. Over the years I have completed many private and public commissions large and small in many parts of the UK. These include various art works for local councils, Exeter Cathedral ‘crown of thorns’, Torre Abbey catacombs restoration, Falmouth regeneration scheme, Crediton and Exeter Street furniture, Micheal Caines Michelin starred Lympstone manor hotel and restaurant, various NHS trust art works, Wetherspoons art works and recently Otter brewery’s holt restaurants and pubs in Exeter and Honiton.

This is but small sample of a vast portfolio of my work. My reputation is built on quality, individuality, craftsmanship and a willingness to embrace new ideas. I hope to be working with you soon.
